FOUR HUNDRED YEARS AGO, on 18 March 1604, there were great celebrations in Vila Vicosa, Portugal, with the announcement of the birth of a son to Dona Anna, wife of D. Teodosio II, seventh Duke of Braganca. The boy was called Joao (John), and as heir to the dukedom of Braganca, held the title Duke of Barcellos. With the death of D. Teodosio II in 1630, Joao became the eighth Duke of Braganca. just ten years later, he went on to free Portugal from the dominance of Spain and was proclaimed King....
