Charcot foot in diabetes

Charcot foot, a term coined after Jean-Martin Charcot, is the common name for neurogenic arthropathy. It is a disease characterized by deterioration and deformity of the bones, ligaments and joints of the foot. The root cause is nerve damage or neuropathy (common in diabetes mellitus), and the disease rapidly and progressively degenerates the tissues of the affected foot.

In the presence of sever neuropathy, the movement and sensation functions of the foot are lost. As such, sprains, strains, stress fractures and other trauma to the foot and ankle go unnoticed because they are not felt. ...
