I THINK IT WAS in 1960 that I last saw W.E.B. Du Bois. My younger brother and I, then teenagers, were describing to a group of my parents' friends how, along with hundreds of other young people, we had defiantly remained in the open air during a cold war civil defense drill when everyone in New York City was supposed to go underground to practice survival in case of a nuclear war.
