American history books contain a wealth of information on the men and women who were the leaders of the abolitionist movement. Early abolitionists of slavery included Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, and Alexander Hamilton. John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States, also was a major leader of the abolitionist forces during the 17 years in which he served in Congress after leaving the presidency.
