Role of equal

Equol is an inert end metabolite of soy-based daidzein in so-called equol producers (1). It is assumed that only ~30-40% of the adult population excretes equol in urine after consumption of soy foods; however the reasons for this remain to be determined (2,3). Equol possesses estrogenic activity, having an affinity for both estrogen receptors, ER-[alpha] and ER-[beta] (4). The antioxidant activity of equol is superior to all other isoflavonoids tested in vitro (5-7).
