ABSTRACT

Atmospheric response to a midlatitude winter SST anomaly is studied in a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model. The role of ocean-atmosphere coupling is examined with ensemble experiments of different coupling configurations. The atmospheric response is found to depend critically on ocean-atmosphere coupling. The full coupling experiment produces the strongest warm-ridge response and agrees the best with a statistical estimation of the atmospheric response. The fi...

Seasonal and Long-Term Atmospheric Responses to Reemerging North Pacific Ocean Variability: A Combined Dynamical and Statistical Assessment*
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT The atmospheric response to a North Pacific subsurface oceanic temperature anomaly is studied in a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model using a combined dynamical and statistical approach, with the focus on the evolution at seasonal and longer time scales. The atmospheric
SST-Forced Atmospheric Variability in an Atmospheric General Circulation Model
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT From ensembles of 80 AGCM simulations for every December-January-February (DJF) seasonal mean in the 1980-2000 period, interannual variability in atmospheric response to interannual variations in observed sea surface temperature (SST) is analyzed. A unique facet of this study is the use of
Transient Atmospheric Response to Interactive SST Anomalies
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT The transient atmospheric response to interactive SST anomalies in the midlatitudes is investigated using a three-layer QG model coupled in perpetual winter conditions to a slab oceanic mixed layer in the North Atlantic. The SST anomalies are diagnosed from a coupled run and prescribed as
Large-scale atmospheric dynamics and the response to sea surface temperature perturbations
Journal of Climate ; PREFACE This special issue of the Journal of Climate consists of six papers, mostly of a review character, on aspects of large-scale atmospheric dynamics and the atmospheric response to ocean surface temperature perturbations. In the period 1990-2000, NOAA, through its Office of Global Programs
The Nonlinear Transient Atmospheric Response to Tropical Forcing
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT Ensemble integrations using a primitive-equation dry atmospheric model were performed to investigate the atmospheric transient response to tropical thermal forcings that resemble El Nio and La Nia. The response develops in the North Pacific within 1 week after the integration. The signal
The nature and causes for the delayed atmospheric response to El Nino
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT Remarkable among the atmospheric phenomena associated with El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the lag in the zonal mean tropical thermal anomalies relative to equatorial east Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs). For the period 1950-99, the maximum correlation between observed zonal
The Nonlinear Patterns of North American Winter Temperature and Precipitation Associated with ENSO
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT Nonlinear projections of the tropical Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) onto North American winter (November-March) surface air temperature (SAT) and precipitation anomalies have been performed using neural networks. During El Nio, the linear SAT response has positive
On the mechanism of North Atlantic decadal variability
Journal of Climate ; (Manuscript received 7 November 1997, in final form 12 August 1998) ABSTRACT North Atlantic decadal climate variability is studied with a coupled atmosphere-ocean-sea ice model (ECBILT). After having reached an approximate statistical equilibrium in coupled mode without applying flux corrections, a
The Effects of North Atlantic SST and Sea Ice Anomalies on the Winter Circulation in CCM3. Part I: Main Features and Storm Track Characteristics of the Response
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT Observed multidecadal trends in extratropical atmospheric flow, such as the positive trend in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index, may be attributable to a number of causes. This study addresses the question of whether the atmospheric trends may be caused by observed trends in
The Tropical Atmospheric El NiƱo Signal in Satellite Precipitation Data and a Global Climate Model
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT Aspects of the tropical atmospheric response to El Nio related to the global energy and water cycle are examined using satellite retrievals from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission and the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-E and simulations from the Goddard Institute for Space
