Evolution and Structure of the Mesoscale Convection and Its Environment: A Case Study during the Early Onset of the Southeast Asian Summer Monsoon
|
ABSTRACT
The evolution and structure of mesoseale convection in the South China Sea (SCS) region are documented for the lirst time mainly using the dual-Doppler radar dataset collected during the South China Sea Monsoon Experiment (SCSMEX) in 1998. In particular, this study focuses on the convection associated with a subtropical frontal passage during the early onset of the southeast Asian monsoon (SEAM).
For the case of 15 May 1998, interaction between the tropical monsoon flow...

Interannual variability of the Western North Pacific summer monsoon: Differences between ENSO and non-ENSO years
Journal of Climate
; ABSTRACT The interannual variability of the western North Pacific (WNP) summer monsoon is examined for the non-ENSO, ENSO developing, and ENSO decaying years, respectively. The ENSO developing (decaying) year is defined as the year before (after) the mature phase of ENSO, and the non-ENSO year is

Symmetry and Asymmetry of the Asian and Australian Summer Monsoons
Journal of Climate
; ABSTRACT The rainfalls associated with the Asian summer monsoon have significant correlation with succeeding Australian summer monsoon rainfalls. This is partly due to the typical life cycle of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phase locked with the annual cycle within an Asian monsoon year

South and East Asian Summer Monsoon Climate and Variation in the MRI Coupled Model (MRI-CGCM2)
Journal of Climate
; ABSTRACT Simulations of the major characteristics of the summer monsoon climate over South Asia, East Asia, and the western North Pacific by the new version of the Meteorological Research Institute coupled GCM (MRI-CGCM2) are analyzed. In addition to assessing the simulation of mean summer monsoon

Definition of South China Sea Monsoon Onset and Commencement of the East Asia Summer Monsoon*
Journal of Climate
; ABSTRACT The climatological mean summer monsoon onset in the South China Sea (SCS) is a remarkably abrupt event. However, defining onset dates for individual years is noticeably controversial. The controversies and complications arise primarily from a number of factors: the intermittent southward

Impacts of air-sea coupling on the simulation of mean Asian summer monsoon in the ECHAM4 model
Monthly Weather Review
; Impacts of Air-Sea Coupling on the Simulation of Mean Asian Summer Monsoon in the ECHAM4 Model* ABSTRACT Atmosphere-ocean coupling was found to play a critical role in simulating the mean Asian summer monsoon and its climatological intraseasonal oscillation (CISO) in comparisons of the results from

Why Has the Land Memory Changed?
Journal of Climate
; ABSTRACT The "land memory" refers to an interseasonal predictability of the summer monsoon rainfall in the southwestern United States, describing a relationship of the summer monsoon rainfall anomaly with anomalies in the antecedent winter season snow and land surface conditions in the western

Simulation of the summer monsoon over India in the ensemble of seasonal simulations from the ECMWF reanalyzed data
Journal of Climate
; ABSTRACT The ensemble of seasonal (120 days) simulations of the Northern Hemispheric summer for the reanalysis period of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts has been examined to assess the extent to which the characteristic features of the Indian summer monsoon can be reproduced

The Annual Cycle, Intraseasonal Oscillations, and Roadblock to Seasonal Predictability of the Asian Summer Monsoon
Journal of Climate
; ABSTRACT Factors responsible for limited predictability of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) are investigated within a conceptual framework for predictability. Predictability of the seasonal mean depends on the interannual variability (IAV) of the monsoon annual cycle (MAC) and is determined by
