Genetic Comparison of Breeding Schemes Based on Semen Importation and Local Breeding Schemes: Framework and Application to Costa Rica
|
ABSTRACT
Local breeding schemes for Holstein cattle of Costa Rica were compared with the current practice based on continuous semen importation (SI) by deterministic simulation. Comparison was made on the basis of genetic response and correlation between breeding goals. A local breeding goal was defined on the basis of prevailing production circumstances and compared against a typical breeding goal for an exporting country. Differences in genetic response were <3%, and the correlati...

Genomics unravels DNA bacteria: in search of near-death experience.(FOOD SAFETY)
Food Engineering & Ingredients
; Would it not it be nice to establish the point at which bacteria or other micro-organisms have their near-death experience. Food manufacturers only need to cross this line by a fraction to get rid of them, which will benefit product quality and lower energy costs. The use of genomics now makes this

Positive Assortative Mating With Family Size as a Function of Predicted Parental Breeding Values
Genetics
; ABSTRACT While other investigations have described benefits of positive assortative mating (PAM) for forest tree breeding, the allocation of resources among mates in these studies was either equal or varied, using schemes corresponding only to parental rank (i.e., more resources invested in

Joint International Evaluation of Milking Shorthorn Dairy Cattle for Production Traits
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Pedigree information and test-day records for the first 3 parities of Milking Shorthorn dairy cattle from 5 countries were analyzed. After editing, the data included 1,018,528 test-day records from 68,653 cows. A multiple-lactation random regression test-day model with Legendre polynomials

Strategies for cintinual application of marker-assisted selection in an open nucleus population
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT The objectives of this study were to develop and simulate the implementation of several strategies for repeated application of quantitative trait loci (QTL) detection and marker-assisted selection (MAS) and to compare the short-term and continual genetic responses. A finite locus model was

Effects of including a quantitative trait locus in selection under different waiting plans of young bulls
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT The advantage of using the genotype of a quantitative trait locus (QTL) in selection schemes of dairy cattle was quantified using stochastic simulation. Three selection plans were studied. In the first plan, young bulls waited for 3 yr until their sisters completed a lactation and then

Genome-Wide Gene Expression Analysis Reveals a Critical Role for CRYPTOCHROME1 in the Response of Arabidopsis to High Irradiance1[W]
Plant Physiology
; Exposure to high irradiance results in dramatic changes in nuclear gene expression in plants. However, little is known about the mechanisms by which changes in irradiance are sensed and how the information is transduced to the nucleus to initiate the genetic response. To investigate whether the
