Animating a jet engine failure

Performing mock-ups of deadly jet engine failures and comparing them with a computerized animation of the same event have helped NASA researchers in their quest to make air travel even safer.

An object as small as a hailstone has been known to cause catastrophic failures in jet engines. This type of engine failure, which is known in the airline industry as a blade-out, occurs when a fragment from one of the engine's blades breaks, shooting outward and damaging other vital parts of the plane.
