UNEARTHING GEORGES BATAILLE
BY RICHARD WOLIN * GEORGES BATAILLE'S RECOGNITION AS A SEMINAL FIGURE OF THE TWENTIETH-CENTURY AVANT-GARDE CAME BELATEDLY. BUT WHEN, SHORTLY AFTER HIS DEATH IN 1962, ACKNOWLEDGMENT DID AT LONG LAST ARRIVE, IT CAME IN TORRENTS. IN 1963 THE JOURNAL CRITIQUE PUBLISHED A SPECIAL COMMEMORATIVE ISSUE IN HONOR OF ITS LATE FOUNDER. (BATAILLE HAD ESTABLISHED THE PRESTIGIOUS REVIEW SHORTLY AFTER THE WAR.)
