ABSTRACT

The spontaneous generation of inertia-gravity waves by balanced motion is investigated in the limit of small Rossby number [epsilon] [much less than] 1. Particular (sheared disturbance) solutions of the three-dimensional Boussinesq equations are considered. For these solutions, there is a strict separation between balanced motion and inertia-gravity waves for large times. This makes it possible to estimate the amplitude of the inertia-gravity waves that are generated spontaneo...

Inertia-Gravity Waves Generated within a Dipole Vortex
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences ; ABSTRACT Vortex dipoles provide a simple representation of localized atmospheric jets. Numerical simulations of a synoptic-scale dipole in surface potential temperature are considered in a rotating, stratified fluid with approximately uniform potential vorticity. Following an initial period of
Inertia-Gravity Wave Generation by Balanced Motion: Revisiting the Lorenz-Krishnamurthy Model
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences ; ABSTRACT The spontaneous generation of inertia-gravity waves by balanced motion at low Rossby number is examined using Lorenz's five-component model. The mostly numerical analysis by Lorenz and Krishnamurthy of a particular (homoclinic) balanced solution is complemented here by an asymptotic
Exponential Smallness of Inertia-Gravity Wave Generation at Small Rossby Number
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences ; ABSTRACT This paper discusses some of the mechanisms whereby fast inertia-gravity waves can be generated spontaneously by slow, balanced atmospheric and oceanic flows. In the small Rossby number regime relevant to midlatitude dynamics, high-accuracy balanced models, which filter out inertia-gravity
Club-fitting philosophy
The Malay Mail ; GOLF is a game. Like any game where equipment is used, the equipment becomes an integral part of the sport. Our experience with club fitting has shown me that the equipment must suit the person. Custom fitting is an acquired skill set. Accurate club fitting can only be outdoors with full ball
Safe crash seat.(control of automobile accidents)(Brief article)
Mechanical Engineering-CIME ; SWAYING GENTLY IN YOUR car's seat may be safer than staying firmly seated. In a head-on collision, automobile passengers seated on a newly designed gliding seat would be much safer than their more traditionally seated counterparts, according to the new seat's designers. Several car companies and

Large-scale flow response to short gravity waves breaking in a rotating shear flow
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences ; ABSTRACT A two-dimensional rotating anelastic model is used to analyze the large-scale flow (LSF) response to the breaking of gravity waves (GWs) at critical levels. In the response the balanced part is separated from the inertial oscillations (IOs) and the inertia-gravity waves (IGWs). Interest

Dynamic Potential Vorticity Initialization and the Diagnosis of Mesoscale Motion
Journal of Physical Oceanography ; ABSTRACT A new method for diagnosing the balanced three-dimensional velocity from a given density field in mesoscale oceanic flows is described. The method is referred to as dynamic potential vorticity initialization (PVI) and is based on the idea of letting the inertia-gravity waves produced by
