ABSTRACT

In this study, a dense fog episode that occurred near Windsor, Ontario, Canada, on 3 September 1999 is investigated. The fog patch, with a spatial scale of several kilometers, reduced visibility on a major highway to a few meters and led to a series of collisions and loss of life. Satellite imagery and surface observations are used to analyze the physics of the event, and several hypotheses on the origin of the fog are presented. A series of simulations of the event with the f...

Transition of stratus into fog along the California coast: Observations and modeling
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences ; ABSTRACT A case of fog formation along the California coast is examined with the aid of a one-dimensional, higher-- order, turbulence-closure model in conjunction with a set of myriad observations. The event is characterized by persistent along-coast winds in the marine layer, and this pattern
Forecasters' misty logic over how fog is formed Cooling air, not ground moisture, is the key
The Sunday Telegraph London ; " . . . and with all the moisture about after the recent heavy rain, mist and fog patches will probably form later in the night." How many times have you heard statements like that in television and radio weather forecasts? It was certainly uttered by at least one presenter at the beginning of last
Process-Oriented Analysis of Environmental Conditions Associated with Precipitation Fog Events in the New York City Region
Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology ; ABSTRACT An analysis of the environmental conditions associated with precipitation fog events is presented using 20 yr of historical observations taken in a region centered on New York, New York. The objective is to determine the preferred weather scenarios and identify physical processes
ANALYSIS AND MODELING OF A DENSE FOG
Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society ; Shortly after sunrise on 3 September 1999, an extremely dense small-scale fog patch reduced visibility near Windsor, Ontario, to several meters on a stretch of a major highway, and led to a series of collisions involving 82 vehicles, claiming 8 lives and injuring 33 people. The fog moved or
Radiative Heat Transfer Analysis within Three-Dimensional Clouds Subjected to Solar and Sky Irradiation
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences ; ABSTRACT A three-dimensional radiative heat transfer analysis of an arbitrary-shaped modeled cloud subjected to solar and sky irradiation has been performed. The Radiation Element Method by Ray Emission Model (REM^sup 2^) was used for numerical simulation. Nongray, anisotropic scattering,
