Abstract India has the unique distinction of having perhaps the largest diversities, both biological and cultural. The Nilgiri Hills of southern India, a home for several tribal pockets representing different genetic isolates, provides a genetic wealth to understand human evolution. We have analyzed eight widely distributed polymorphic insertion/deletion loci (AluAPO, AluACE, AluD1, AluPLAT, AluPV92, AluFXIIIB, CD4 del and mtNUC) in 250 unrelated individuals from five tribal populations (Bada...

Ethnic Differences in Allele Distribution for the IL8 and IL1B Genes in Populations from Eastern India
Human Biology
; Abstract Populations from eastern India have been examined for the allele distribution at polymorphic sites in the IL8 and IL1B genes. Significant differences in allele frequencies between caste and tribal population groups were observed. However, there are no differences in allele frequencies

Molecular genetic diversity in 5 populations of Madhya Pradesh, India
Human Biology
; Abstract This paper presents data on the distribution of 3 amplified fragment length polymorphisms (D1580, APOB, and YNZ22) in 5 populations of Central India. Using the polymerase chain reaction technique, 3 caste (Brahmin, Khatri, and Dhimer) and 2 tribal (Gond and Baiga) populations were studied

Patterns of genetic diversity at the nine forensically approved STR loci in the Indian populations
Human Biology
; Abstract Genetic diversity at the nine short tandem repeat (STR) loci, which are universally approved and widely used for forensic investigations, has been studied among nine Indian populations with diverse ethnic, linguistic, and geographic backgrounds. The nine STR loci were profiled on 902

Genetic structure of the Manne Dora, a tribal population of Andhra Pradesh
Human Biology
; Indian populations consist of about 4000 endogamous groups (Malhotra and Gadgil 1984) that show enormous variation in language, marriage pattern, food habits, rituals, and many other cultural aspects. These groups provide a unique opportunity to study genetic variation. Studies undertaken so far on

Genetic variation of apolipoproteins in North Indians
Human Biology
; Abstract Genetic variation at three apolipoprotein loci (APOA4, APOH, and APOE) has been examined in nine endogamous populations of Punjab, North India. The overall pattern of allele frequency variation at different loci is compatible with that of European populations, but observed microvariation

Genetic Diversity and Relationships Among the Tribes of Meghalaya Compared to Other Indian and Continental Populations
Human Biology
; Abstract The autosomal AmpFLSTR markers validated and widely used for forensic applications are used in this study to examine the extent of diversity and genetic relationships among nine Meghalaya populations. Altogether, 932 chromosomes from 9 populations were analyzed using 9 tetrameric AmpFLSTR
