Investigations into the thaumasite form of sulfate attack (TSA) in the UK during the last five years have prompted a review of guidance into sulfate-bearing ground for concrete. The objective of this article is to summarise the history of this guidance.
UK organisations responsible for guidance
Since the 1930s, guidance on UK assessment of sulfate-bearing ground and concrete specification for resistance to sulfate attack has been formulated by the Building Research Station (BRS)...

Sulfate resistances of different types of Turkish Portland cements by selecting the appropriate test methods.
Construction and Building Materials
; Abstract The sulfate resistance of 5 different types of Turkish portland cements were compared using ASTM C 452 and ASTM C 1012 standards. All of the cements, except for sulfate resisting cement, were prepared from the same clinker. As it was expected, ASTM C 452 test was found to be insufficient

Sulfate resistance of plain and blended cements exposed to wetting--drying and heating--cooling environments.
Construction and Building Materials
; Abstract Exposure conditions significantly affect the resistance of cements to sulfate attack. This article investigates the sulfate resistance of ordinary portland cement (OPC), sulfate resistant portland cement (SRPC), and blended cements with different proportions of natural pozzolan and Class F

Sulfate Attack of Mortars Containing Recycled Fine Aggregates
ACI Materials Journal
; This paper presents a detailed experimental study on the durability of mortar specimens made with recycled fine aggregate exposed to external sulfate attack. The replacement level and the type of the recycled fine aggregate were the main test variables. The mortar specimens were immersed in a 5%

5 Ways concrete can fail, and how to avoid them.
Building Design & Construction
; By Dave Barista, Managing Editor Concrete is one of most durable manmade materials, but even this old industry workhorse has its weaknesses. Exposure to harsh weather, reactions with common elements, and poor construction can all lead to concrete failure. Michael Brainerd, principal at Boston-based

Effect of sulfate concentration and associated cation type on concrete deterioration and morphological changes in cement hydrates.
Construction and Building Materials
; Abstract This paper reports results of a study conducted to evaluate the effect of sulfate concentration and the associated cation type on concrete deterioration and morphological changes in cement hydrates. The concrete specimens were exposed to 5% NaCl solution admixed with varying concentrations

Salt Weathering Distress on Concrete Exposed to Sodium Sulfate Environment
ACI Materials Journal
; Under certain environmental exposure conditions, rocks and stone monuments are known to exhibit salt weathering or physical salt attack. A similar phenomenon is found with ordinary porous concrete exposed to soils containing sodium sulfate. This type of physical attack on concrete was overlooked by
