Improved confidence intervals for estimating the position of a mass extinction boundary

Abstract.-Marshall (1995) used the distribution of the endpoints of 50% range extensions added to the stratigraphic ranges of individual taxa to bracket the position of an extinction boundary. Here we describe two improvements to Marshall's method. First, we show that more precise estimates of the position of such a boundary may be obtained using range extensions with confidence levels of less than 50% (e.g., 20%). Second, we introduce a new method of calculating confidence intervals that exp...

Graphing within-subjects confidence intervals using SPSS and S-Plus
Behavior Research Methods ; Within-subjects confidence intervals are often appropriate to report and to display. Loftus and Masson (1994) have reported methods to calculate these, and their use is becoming common. In the present article, procedures for calculating within-subjects confidence intervals in SPSS and S-Plus are
State gives schools extra leeway; Change allows more to meet federal mandates
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ; Despite increasingly tough standards, the number of Wisconsin schools that will be flagged this year for failing to meet federally mandated reading and math goals will be less than half what it was last year 51 as opposed to 108 but not because things are getting better. Rather, it is the state's
Confidence Intervals Within Hypnosis Research
Sleep and Hypnosis ; Confidence intervals within hypnosis would improve research, especially confidence intervals for effect sizes. Moreover, within hypnosis research, confidence intervals are needed for reliability and validity measures. This paper describes definitions and issues related to confidence intervals.
Using confidence intervals for graphically based data interpretation*
Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology ; Abstract As a potential alternative to standard null hypothesis significance testing, we describe methods for graphical presentation of data - particularly condition means and their corresponding confidence intervals - for a wide range of factorial designs used in experimental psychology. We

The American Statistician ; 1. INTRODUCTION Let [X.sub.1], [X.sub.2 [X.sub.n] be binomial random variables with common unknown success probability p. Let [n.sub.i] be the number of trials for each [X.sub.i] and N = [n.sub.1] + [n.sub.2] + + [n.sub.n]. When the [X.sub.i]'s are independent, [S.sub.N] = [X.sub.1] + [X.sub.2] +
Confidence intervals for the probability of insolvency in the insurance industry.
Journal of Risk and Insurance ; INTRODUCTION Recent literature provides point estimators for measuring the probability of insolvency for each insurer using logit models (see Ambrose and Carroll 1994; Cummins, Harrington and Klein 1995; and Lamm-Tennant, Starks and Stokes 19961) Numerous studies have focused on comparing
STATISTICAL TOOL HELPS SCHOOLS\ HUNDREDS MEET GOAL WITH GRADING CURVE.(News)
The Kentucky Post (Covington, KY) ; Byline: Associated Press LEXINGTON -- Schools that would otherwise fall below new federal education goals are being given wide leeway thanks to a generous statistical grade curve, a newspaper reported. An analysis of last year's raw test data by the Lexington Herald-Leader showed that 871 of 1,208

Likelihood ratio-based confidence intervals in survival analysis.
Journal of the American Statistical Association ; Confidence intervals for the survival function and the cumulative hazard function are considered. These confidence intervals are based on an inversion of the likelihood ratio statistic. To do this, two extensions of the likelihood, each of which yields meaningful likelihood ratio hypothesis tests
