Inmarsat goes to Astrium for broadband satellites

Astrium Telecommunications and Navigation unit - until May known as Matra Marconi Space - celebrated its formal name-change with the award of a $700 million contract to build three I-4 broadband satellites for Inmarsat.

They will be capable of carrying Internet-Protocol (IP) data at 432kbps. Two will be launched in 2003 and co-located with I-3 satellites at 54W and 64E, where they will be inter-operable with the existing spacecraft. The third will be a ground spare, initially.
