Electromagnetic levitation is applied to achieve containerless solidification of 10-mm-diameter droplets of Al-50 at. pet Si. A maximum undercooling of 320 K is obtained. Phase morphologies on the droplet surfaces and on the deeply etched sections of the samples solidified at different undercoolings are examined by scanning electron microscopy. The primary silicon shows well-developed faceted denclrites at a small undercooling, but a fine granular form at a large undercooling. Stratified depo...

Effect of Solidification Cooling Rate on the Morphology and Number per Unit Volume of Primary Mg^sub 2^Si Particles in a Hypereutectic Al-Mg-Si Alloy
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; Growth morphology and number N^sub v^. per unit volume have been determined vs withdrawal velocity V over the range 0.1 to 4 mm/s for primary Mg^sub 2^Si in a Bridgman-solidified hypereutectic Al-Mg-Si alloy. Primary Mg^sub 2^Si shows a transition from irregular or regular polyhedral to dendritic
Forming Nanostructured Hypereutectic Aluminum via High-Velocity Oxyfuel Spray Deposition
JOM ; Al-Si alloys are widely used in aerospace and automobile industries due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and superior wear and corrosion resistance. Increasing the percentage of silicon in these alloys improves their wear resistance and strength considerably, but impairs their ductility. This
HVOF spray forms nanoscale hypereutectic aluminum rings.(Surface Engineering)
Advanced Materials & Processes ; Nanostructured hypereutectic aluminum rings have been formed on an aluminum substrate via high-velocity oxyfuel (HVOF) spray technology, reports Plasma Processes Inc., Huntsville, Ala. HVOF spray can refine primary silicon efficiently by allowing less time for the growth of faceted primary silicon
Rapidly solidified aluminum alloy powder.
Advanced Materials & Processes ; The mechanical properties of aluminum-silicon alloys hot extruded from centrifugally atomized powders were studied as a function of silicon content. Miniaturization and weight reduction are becoming increasingly important in the fabrication of vehicles. In particular, aluminum-silicon alloys are
Novel Image Analysis to Determine the Si Modification for Hypoeutectic and Hypereutectic Al-Si Alloys
JOM ; The aim of this research is to develop a novel analytical approach to determine the level of modification of silicon in Al-Si hypoeutectic and hypereutectic alloys. Two standards to determine the level of modification of silicon particles were investigated: the AFS Si Modification Standard and the
