The Southern Cone and Brazil have entered a new era of economic adjustment, cooperation, and integration. The creation in 1991 of an integrated market known as MERCOSUR (Mercado Comun del Sur) has meant the lowering of barriers to the free flow of goods between the member countries, Argentina, Ur uguay, Paraguay, and Brazil. In 1996, Chile and Bolivia became associates of MERCOSUR, having joined the free trade zone without adopting the common external tariff system (Sucesos 1998).
