Reduced Mechanical Efficiency in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease but Normal Peak V(dot above)O^sub 2^ with Small Muscle Mass Exercise

We studied six patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (FEV^sub 1^ = 1.1 ± 0.2 L, 32% of predicted) and six age- and activity level-matched control subjects while performing both maximal bicycle exercise and single leg knee-extensor exercise. Arterial and femoral venous blood sampling, thermodilution blood flow measurements, and needle biopsies allowed the assessment of muscle oxygen supply, utilization, and structure. Maximal work rates and single leg V(dot above)O^sub 2^...

Insulin action on heart and skeletal muscle FDG uptake in patients with hypertriglyceridemia
The Journal of Nuclear Medicine ; Abnormal heart and skeletal muscle ^sup 18^F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in patients with insulin resistance has been demonstrated. Although the existence of whole-body insulin resistance has been reported in hypertriglyceridemics, its specific role in heart and skeletal muscle FDG uptake in
Taking skeletal muscle to heart.
Science News ; Taking Skeletal Muscle to Heart Would you have your songs endure? Build on the human heart, advised Robert Browning in the mid-1800s. Day in, day out, the human heart endures -- leaving physiologists, as well as poets, marveling at its dependability. No other type of muscle has the stamina of that
Bioimpedance analysis: Potential for measuring lower limb skeletal muscle mass
JPEN, Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition ; Christopher Nunez, EdM; Dympna Gallagher, EdD; Jill Grammes, MS; Richard N. Baumgartner, PhD*; Robert Ross, PhDt; ZiMian Wang, PhD; John Thornton, PhD; and Steven B. Heymsfield, MD ABSTRACT. Background: Ambulation, balance, and lower extremity bone mass and strength are all partially dependent on
A novel in vitro three-dimensional skeletal muscle model
In Vitro Cellular & Developmental Biology ; Abstract A novel three-dimensional (3D) skeletal muscle model composed of C2C12 mouse myoblasts is described. This model was generated by cultivating myoblasts in suspension using the rotary cell culture system (RCCS), a unique culture environment. Single-cell suspensions of myoblasts were seeded
Chronic infusion of interleukin 1 induces hyperlactatemia and altered regulation of lactate metabolism in skeletal muscle
JPEN, Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition ; ABSTRACT. Background: Hyperlactatemia is observed commonly in patients with severe inflammation syndrome or sepsis. Elevated plasma lactate concentrations may be caused by cytokine-mediated alterations in specific organ systems responsible for lactate homeostasis. The role of interleukin 1 (IL-1)
Muscle-derived CD45-SCA-1 + C-KIT- progenitor cells give rise to skeletal muscle myotubes in vitro
In Vitro Cellular & Developmental Biology ; (Received 26 July 2002; accepted 19 December 2002) SUMMARY A stem cell population isolated from murine skeletal muscle has recently been shown to differentiate into hematopoietic cells after transplantation in vivo. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that this cell population would
Fast and Slow Skeletal Troponin I in Serum from Patients with Various Skeletal Muscle Disorders: A Pilot Study
Clinical Chemistry ; Background: Detection of skeletal muscle injury is hampered by a lack of commercially available assays for serum markers specific for skeletal muscle; serum concentrations of skeletal troponin I (sTnI) could meet this need. Moreover, because sTnI exists in 2 isoforms, slow (ssTnI) and fast (fsTnI),
Morphology and molecular composition of sarcosplasmic reticulum surface junctions in the absence of DHPR and RyR in mouse skeletal muscle
Biophysical Journal ; ABSTRACT Calcium release during excitation-contraction coupling of skeletal muscle cells is initiated by the functional interaction of the exterior membrane and the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), mediated by the "mechanical" coupling of ryanodine receptors (RyR) and dihydropyridine receptors (DHPR).
Contribution of stem cells to skeletal muscle regeneration
Folia Histochemica et Cytobiologica ; Abstract: Stem cells for skeletal muscle originate from dermomyotome of the embryo. The early marker of these cells is expression of both transcription factors Pax3 and Pax7 (Pax3+/Pax7+ cells). The skeletal muscles in the adult organism have a remarkable ability to regenerate. Skeletal muscle
Dietary fatty acids influence the activity and metabolic control of mitochondrial carnitine palmitoyltransferase I in rat heart and skeletal muscle
The Journal of Nutrition ; Dietary Fatty Acids Influence the Activity and Metabolic Control of Mitochondrial Carnitine Palmitoyltransferase I in Rat Heart and Skeletal Muscle' Glen W. Power23 and Eric A. Newsholme ABSTRACT The fatty acid composition of the diet has been found to influence the activity and sensitivity of
