They are deployed to the far stretches of the world's oceansoperating stealthily far beneath the surface or, closer to shore; in the shallow littoral waters off distant lands. Regardless of where their mission takes them-on strategic-deterrent patrols that have helped to keep the peace for nearly 40 years or on highly sensitive intelligence and reconnaissance missions-those who wear the distinctive gold and silver dolphins of the "Silent Service" will pause this month to commemorate their 100th anniversary.
