Background

At the time of the Russian campaign of 1812, Alexander and Napoleon were still allies, and both wanted things to remain that way. There were, however, two major problems between the two rulers. Napoleon had wanted to create a new Polish state, Alexander and his nobles were totally opposed. Indeed, they were outraged that Napoleon had created the Duchy of Warsaw, and sought to have Napoleon abandon it. This Napoleon would not do; he had given his word to the Poles, and he wanted a buffer between Russia and the rest of Europe. Some Poles, in the end, felt that Napoleon had betrayed ...
