Introduction
The Western Front of 1914-18 looms in the British national memory as a uniquely appalling experience. Thus it is hardly surprising that there were many cases of what was called at the time 'shell-shock' - or, as we would say today, post-traumatic stress disorder. It likewise hardly surprises us that the theory and practice of psychiatric treatment of 'shell-shock' made remarkable progress during the Great War.
