ABSTRACT High plasma homocysteine is a risk for cardiovascular disease and can be lowered through supplementation with 6 g/d of betaine. However, dietary intake of betaine is ~0.5-2 g/d. Therefore, we investigated whether betaine supplementation in the range of dietary intake lowers plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy adults. Four groups of 19 healthy subjects ingested three doses of betaine or placebo daily for 6 wk. A methionine loading test was performed during run in, on d 1 of ...

Plasma homocysteine concentrations in a population with a low coronary heart disease prevalence
The Journal of Nutrition
; Hyperhomocysteinemia may be an additional risk factor predisposing individuals to premature coronary heart disease (CHD). In population groups with a high CHD prevalence, retrospective (Clarke et al. 1991, Israelsson et al. 1988) and prospective (Stampfer et al. 1992) studies demonstrated increased

Dietary Eritadenine Suppresses Guanidinoacetic Acid-Induced Hyperhomocysteinemia in Rats1
The Journal of Nutrition
; Abstract We assessed the effect of eritadenine, a hypocholesterolemic factor isolated from the edible mushroom Lentinus edodes, on plasma homocysteine concentration using methyl-group acceptor-induced hyperhomocysteinemic rats. Male Wistar rats were fed a control diet or diets supplemented with a

Relationship between plasma homocysteine, vitamin status and extracranial carotid-artery stenosis in the Framingham Study ...
The Journal of Nutrition
; Almost 25 years ago McCully (1969) reported that a child dying of homocystinuria, cystathionuria and methylmalonic aciduria, secondary to abnormality of cobalamin metabolism, exhibited arterial lesions that were strikingly similar to those seen in patients with cystathionine beta synthase

Insulin Resistance Is Not Related to Plasma Homocysteine Concentration in Healthy Premenopausal Women
Physiological Research
; Summary This study was performed to test whether plasma homocysteine concentrations are related to insulin resistance in healthy premenopausal women. For this purpose, the relationship between insulin resistance (as assessed by HOMA index) and fasting plasma homocysteine level was determined in 83

Vitamins as homocysteine-lowering agents
The Journal of Nutrition
; There is rapidly accumulating evidence that moderate hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (Boushey et al. 1995, Selhub et al. 1995, Stampfer et al. 1992, Uemd et al. 1992). To date, all but a few of over 75 studies, including a total of more than 15,000

Betaine supplementation lowers plasma homocysteine in healthy men and women1,2
The Journal of Nutrition
; ABSTRACT Elevated levels of plasma total homocysteine are associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Betaine and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate can remethylate homocysteine into methionine via independent reactions. We determined the effect of daily betaine supplementation, compared with

Unexpected relationship between plasma homocysteine and intrauterine growth restriction
Clinical Chemistry
; Background: Moderate hyperhomocysteinemia is considered a risk factor for thrombosis and atherosclerosis. We hypothesized that higher maternal and newborn homocysteine concentrations in plasma would increase the risk of intrauterine growth restriction through placental thrombosis. Methods: We
