Asian Whelks threat continues in Chesapeake Bay

The Veined Rapa Whelk, a nonnative predatory marine snail, was first discovered in Virginia waters during June 1998. As of January 2000, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has recorded more than 650 adult specimens. The known range of this animal in the lower Chesapeake Bay is from the mouth of the Rappahannock River in the north, to the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel in the southeast, to just above the James River bridge in the southwest.
