In Boston last July, when the heat was just about the only thing to think about, a small blurb in The Boston Globe gave lovers of vocal music something to get their minds off the summer blahs.

Fresh out of New England Conservatory, local soprano Barbara Quintiliani, age twenty-two, had just won first place in the Marian Anderson International Vocal Arts Competition - on top of being named one of the five national winners in the Metropolitan Opera auditions earlier in the year.
