You Had To Ask: There are many things in this town (including the town itself) that bear the name of Fort Pitt; What's so special about it?

Built after the English seized Fort Duquesne in 1758, Fort Pitt stood as a monument to two great English pastimes: sticking it to the French and kicking out Indians.

The English quickly realized that Pittsburgh's Point was a strategic location, and so the fort they built there was the most elaborate of any frontier post. Fort Pitt took two years to complete, and measured more than 17 acres, with ramparts 15 feet high. It was also protected by ditches which, when the rivers flooded, served as moats (and which some accounts say served as crude bowling alleys when they were dry).
