Governor's Island is a 172-acre island a mere half-mile of the southern tip of Manhattan. The Dutch bought the island from the Manahatas Indians, in June 1637 for a string of beads and a few nails. The possibility of New York State paying the Federal government such a meager price for the prime real estate is slim. MayorGeorge Michael Bloomberg and Governor Pataki are currently in negotiations with the federal government to settle on a "nominal" price for the island.
