Because it has been called "cheaply farcical," "commercial," and "stereotypical," I have to admit I went to see Anton in Show Business with certain reservations, and I don't mean the kind that involve tickets. After seeing the production currently playing at the Western Stage, all I can say is, what were those reviewers thinking?

Anton in Show Business joins a long line of backstage comedies. On the surface, it tells the story of a small Texas regional theater's attempt to stage Anton Chekhov's beautiful play Three Sisters. And although this by itself would make a highly entertaining comedy, ...
