Billy Collins is the U.S. Poet Laureate for this year, 2001-02. Unlike British Laureates, he doesn't have to stay in office till he drops or compose poems for national occasions (for which he probably thanks God and the Revolutionary War) or make up ditties for George W.'s birthday. He isn't a William like Wordsworth or Shakespeare, but even on the cover is a plain and playful Billy. His "New and Collected Poems" with the typically ironic Collins title, "Sailing Alone Around The Room," could daunt nobody. It would be hard to write an exam paper on him.
