Gore Vidal's latest collection of essays is not quite the hot potato it might have been, in spite of refusals from well-known publishers to publish it. ("Since September 11, my attempts to get published have met with failure.") This is not because it lacks wit and insight -- in fact it fizzes with both -- or plain indignation, or a necessary respect for facts. It's just that so much more has happened since it was written. History moves fast; it's moved with alarming speed this year and a book of essays like this one can't quite keep up with it.
