It's a rare occasion when one branches out from the old LPs and buys a new album of classical North Indian music. Oftentimes, the only fresh material available in this genre is from amateur players in Indian restaurants. Not so when it comes to the ever-auspicious sarod-master Ali Akbar Khan, who turns 80 in April. His triumphant live recording, From Father to Son, highlights, for the first time, Akbar's son Anam, and supposedly the father/guru is still "teaching" during the concert. But you would be hard pressed to find any student-quality playing.
