Sacabo & Rulfo
|
Editor's Note: Before there was "magical realism" and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, there was Juan Rulfo, the Mexican writer whose Pedro Paramo is one of the classic novels of the 20th century. The Observer is pleased to publish Elena Poniatowska's essay on Rulfo, Pedro Paramo, and the photography of Laredo native Josephine Sacabo. Poniatowska, whose books have been reviewed in these pages, is one of Latin America's leading journalists and authors. This essay was translated by Connie Todd, curator of Special Collections at Alkek Library, Southwest Texas State University.
