The piqueteros (literally, pickets or picketers) represent a phenomenon of considerable novelty to Argentine and Latin American politics. Rather than consisting of unionized workers engaged in strikes of whatever kind, as the name might suggest, the people involved represent a successful effort at mobilizing some of those who have rarely been actively involved as an organized force in national politics: the chronically unemployed poor, their families, and local sympathizers of a similar impoverished background.
