Needed: Geographic research on urban sustainability

According to United Nations projections, 6 billion of the world's 9 billion people in the year 2050 will live in cities, a tripling of the urban population over current levels in just two generations. Urbanization at this unprecedented scale poses simultaneous challenges of social and economic destitution and massive environmental degradation. These twin perils, in turn, have prompted calls from myriad quarters for research and action promoting urban sustainability.
