Abstract

Newmont Mining Corp. has been processing refractory gold ores by roasting since January 1995. The ores are refractory due to the association of the gold with iron sulfides, namely, pyrite and marcasite, and due to the presence of carbonaceous components. The ore is oxidized in an oxygen-enriched gaseous atmosphere. The structural characteristics of the calcine have a strong influence on the eventual recovery of gold by cyanidation.
