ABSTRACT Reductions in copper due to dietary restriction or transporter deficiency in brindled mice or humans with Menkes disease lead to reduced cuproenzyme activities, mitochondrial abnormalities, neurodegeneration and early mortality. The mechanisms for observed neuropathology remain unknown.
