Feminine Mystique: The lives of extraordinary American Jewish women are profiled in new encyclopedia.

I'd never heard of Thelma "Tiby" Eisten, the outstanding center fielder in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in the 1940s and '50s, or Clara Lemlich Shavelson, the suffragist, community organizer and peace activist whose Yiddish speech set off the 1909 Uprising of the 20,000, the largest strike by women workers up to that point. She spent her final years in a Los Angeles nursing home where she organized the orderlies.
