When neo-Nazis threatened to demonstrate in Skokie in 1977-78, Albert J. Smith was mayor of the Village. He had been mayor since 1965, when the Caucus Party first came to power, and he remained mayor until 1987, when he resigned. The village Board then appointed Jacqueline Gorell to succeed him.
When she retired in 1999, the current mayor, George Van Dusen, was appointed her successor.
