I REMEMBER THE FIRST, and only, time I heard Isaac Bashevis Singer speak. It was around 1970, in Toronto, in a crowded room in the Jewish Community Center building at Bloor and Spadina streets, in the city's old Jewish neighborhood. I was lucky to have arrived early enough to get a seat; it was a standing-room-only crowd.

Singer was by this time a prolific writer, most of whose works were published first in Yiddish in the Forverts and then translated into English. Several years after this Toronto appearance, in 1978, he would receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.
