St. Mary's was the first institution of higher learning in San Antonio, Texas, a small frontier settlement that grew to become the nation's eighth largest city. Nearly 150 years ago, four brothers of the Society of Mary (the Marianists) stepped off the Indianola stagecoach onto the dusty streets of downtown San Antonio, then a village of 3,000. In converted rented quarters above a livery stable, they created the first school for young men in South Texas. "The Brothers School" opened for the instruction of 12 pupils.
