Although many college officials talk about promoting multiculturalism, administrators at Smith College, a recognized leader in liberal arts education for women, have made a strong commitment. A major factor in this effort is President Ruth J. Simmons, whose 1995 appointment as Smith's ninth president was hailed as an historic moment in higher education.
