News and Views: An Unlikely Location for America's Only African Language. Degree Program

Few blacks live in the state of Wisconsin and the percentage of African Americans is even smaller at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Yet the university offers the only degree-granting program in African languages and literature in the United States.

All told, the University of Wisconsin at Madison enrolls about 40,000 students. Less than 2 percent of these students are black. The University of Wisconsin's low percentage of black students is not surprising as African Americans make up only about 5 ...
