News and Views: Black Colleges Produce Few Peace Corps Volunteers

In his inaugural address on January 20, 1961, President John F. Kennedy issued a call for activism and volunteerism by the American public. In what has become his most remembered words, the President said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Within the next six weeks the Peace Corps was founded. Young people across America signed up to volunteer their services to work overseas in an effort to build a better life for people in developing nations.
