News and Views: The American Academy of Arts and Sciences; Black Faces in. a Sea of Whites
The prestigious honorary society the American Academy of Arts and Sciences was established in 1779. As this was more than 80 years prior to Emancipation, it is not surprising that at the time of its founding, and for many years afterward, no blacks were admitted as members. Today, 218 years later, it appears that of its 3,481 members, 45 are black.
