Founded in 1961 by an executive order of President John F. Kennedy, the Peace Corps sends thousands of volunteers each year to more than 70 countries around the world. In 1961 the first Peace Corps volunteers were sent to the nation of Ghana in West Africa.

Peace Corps volunteers perform a wide variety of public service tasks including teaching in schools, building infrastructure projects, and caring for the sick.
