Colleges and Universities Offering the Largest Number of Black Studies Courses

IN his 1942 book The Negro and Our History, Carter G. Woodson wrote, "We should emphasize not Negro history but the Negro in history." Over the past three decades a discipline generally labeled as black studies has attempted to follow through on Dr. Woodson's advice. Clearly, the emergence of black studies occurred because the African American in the United States was no longer willing to be, as Ralph Ellison accurately labeled him, "The Invisible Man."
