News and Views: Scrooges in Philadelphia Have Girard College on a Lean Budget

In 1848 Girard College in Philadelphia was founded from the proceeds of the estate of financier Stephen Girard. In his will Girard restricted admissions to white youth. Three years after Martin Luther King Jr. took part in a protest at the school, the Supreme Court overturned the racial covenant in 1968. The school now has become predominantly black. Girard's academic reputation has declined and the school's trustees have cut back funding of the school's programs.
