From the inception of the Rhodes Scholarship program in 1906, to 1962 -- with the exception of Alain Locke in 1907 -- not one of the hundreds of American college students who were awarded a Rhodes Scholarship was a black person. Then, in 1962, after 65 years, John Edgar Wideman, today a widely read novelist and professor at the University of Massachusetts, again broke the Rhodes Scholarship color barrier.
