News and Views: Alabama State University; Academics Are Taking a Back Seat to Football

In common with other state-supported black universities in the South, Alabama State University was founded 133 years ago to carry out racial segregation in higher education. Yes, the Negro was entitled to go to college but only to one that prepared him or her for industrial work or for teaching black children in the racially segregated schools of the South.
