CHESTER HIMES, WHO died in Spain in 1984, was one of the most celebrated African-American novelists of the twentieth century. His crime novels, featuring the Harlem detectives Grave Digger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson, offered a stark look at life in the seamy underworld of America's inner cities.
